Flooded Schoharie County homes to be demolished

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. (AP) - More than three dozen homes in Schoharie County that were damaged by tropical storm Irene will be torn down next month.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports that the demolition of 37 homes was approved last month as part of a federal hazard mitigation program.
 
County officials say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved about $4.5 million in funding for the estimated $6 million cost to buy flooded properties from their owners.
 
Schoharie County was one of the worst-hit areas in New York when Irene brought torrential rain that caused severe flooding.
 
New York officials announced in early February that nearly 650 buyout applications had been approved for the FEMA program for upstate properties damaged in the summer of 2011 by the back-to-back storms Irene and Lee.
