ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - Parishioners in a Vermont town who lost the part of their church in a fire in 2011 are preparing to break ground for a new one.

The Holy Family-St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church in Essex Junction was hit by lightning and a fire started. It destroyed the 100-year-old recently renovated former barn that served as the meeting hall.

Church officials tell the Burlington Free Press the proposed new hall is projected to cost about $1.25 million and will be funded through a combination of the insurance settlement on the old hall and a soon-to-be-launched fundraising drive. The 3,900 square-foot building would be larger than the old hall.

The parish serves about 1,000 village-area families in the state's second-largest community.
