BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Rep. Edward Markey has received the endorsement of another statewide teacher union in his bid to win the Democratic nomination in the state's special U.S. Senate election.

President of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Federation of Teachers Tom Gosnell said Markey has been an advocate for students and pushed for reforms that Gosnell said strengthen the public education system and reward effective teaching methods.

The union says it represents 25,000 Massachusetts public school employees and higher education faculty.

Last month, Markey won the endorsement of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, which says it has 100,000 members.

The unions could help Markey turn out volunteers and donations in the special election.

Fellow Democratic Senate hopeful Stephen Lynch has also won the backing of some unions including the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
