NISKAYUNA - A 70-year-old Schenectady man was hit and killed by a car in front of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Niskayuna on Good Friday. Police say Gary Amell was leaving the church and holding a prayer book when he was struck.
Police identified the driver as 88-year-old Maria Rubonis. They say she was leaving the church parking lot after a Good Friday service.
Witnesses tell police Amell was in the crosswalk when he was hit.
At this time, no tickets have been issued.
A section of Union Street was closed for a while in front of the church, formerly known as St. Helen's. The victim's prayer book could still be seen on the windshield of the car, surrounded by police tape.
