MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - With just a week or two to go in this year's Vermont Legislative session, it's becoming clear that lawmakers won't finish work and pass a bill requiring labels on genetically modified food.
The House Judiciary Committee isn't expected to finish its work on the measure and send it to the full House for debate until next week.
Backers of the measure say that doesn't leave enough time for the bill to move through the Senate process and then have any differences between the two chambers' versions worked out.
The Judiciary Committee was going to take more testimony on the measure on Friday afternoon. Among the concerns throughout the process is the likelihood that a Vermont law on GMO labeling could draw a lawsuit from the biotech industry.
