MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Alissa Peterson scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner with 2:48 left in the second half, to help the 14th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over fifth-ranked Gettysburg College, this afternoon at Kohn Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 16-3 overall and advance to Saturday’s Regional Final against third-ranked Middlebury (1pm). The Bullets conclude their season at 19-2.

Gettysburg came out strong, taking a 3-1 lead in the game’s first 4:35 of play. The Bullets later led 5-2 when Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards) scored her second of the half, with a hard low shot. Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) worked a quick give-and-go with Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) just 15 seconds later, as the Engineers cut the advantage to 5-3 with 6:39 remaining.

Kenny found the back of the net for the third time with a nice roll move around the crease, before Maguire netted her second of the half on a free position to make it a 6-4 Gettysburg lead at the intermission. The goal for Maguire was the 100th of her collegiate career.

Rensselaer scored the first four goals of the second half to take an 8-6 lead, with 19:06 left to play. Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) scored the first two goals of the run, before Maguire netted her third of the game and second on a free position attempt to give her team its first lead of the game. Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY/Colonie) netted the final goal of the run on a restart.

Gettysburg answered with a pair of goals to tie the game at 8-8. Maggie Connolly (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored on a long drive from the outside before Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, MD/Holton-Arms) converted a quick pass from Kenny with 5:55 remaining.

The Bullets had a great chance to take the lead when they went on a player advantage at the 4:15 mark, but a turnover left Rensselaer the ball. The Engineers worked the ball quickly, before Peterson was fouled on her way to the goal. With 2:48 left on the clock, she netted the game-winner on a free position with a shot to the top right corner of the goal. The tally was Peterson’s 50th of the season. Gettysburg had the ball in the final minute, but was unable to get a shot at tying the game as they turned the ball over.

Peterson and Maguire each scored three times for Rensselaer, while Maguire had five draw controls. Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) scored twice, while Riley had a pair of assists. Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) earned six saves on the afternoon.

Kenny scored three to pace the Bullets, Robinson had a goal and two assists, while Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, CT/Berkshire School) earned a goal and an assist. Lindsay Clinton (Barto, PA/Boyertown) finished with nine saves in goal.

The Engineers equal the school record for wins in season (16), which was set last year. The victory was also the schools first in NCAA Tournament play away from Renwyck Field.
