MECHANICVILLE - Though tornadoes are not as common in the Capital Region as they are in the Midwest, they do happen.

One of the most destructive to ever this area was the Mechanicville tornado in 1998.

It struck on May 31 Memorial Day weekend.

The F3 twister with winds topping 206 miles per hour devastated the town.

It also damaged or destroyed more than 200 homes.

NewsChannel 13’s John McLoughlin spoke to people who lost their houses in that storm.
