MALTA - It was once a sprawling horse farm, surrounded by an iconic white fence.

Now, a small section of the 140 acre-parcel, adjacent to Exit 12 of the Northway is home to the region's newest health care facility.

They cut the ribbon on the Malta Med Emergent Care center on Friday.

It's a $17.5-million collaboration between Saratoga Hospital and Albany Med. The emergency doctors come from Albany. The nurses and other staff from Saratoga.

"So if you have a situation which would normally bring you to an emergency room of a hospital, come here. If you can do that, if it's convenient and it's closer to come here, because you're going to be getting the same physicians," said James Barba, president and C.E.O. of Albany Med.

They expect to treat more than 30-thousand patients a year. They'll offer all of the care you'd typically find in a hospital emergency room. 24 treatment rooms, x-rays, CT and MRI.

There's even a heli-pad so the critically ill can be flown to Albany Med.

This follows the opening of a similar emergent care facility opened by Ellis Medicine in Clifton Park in October.

NewsChannel 13 asked Angelo Calbone, president and CEO of Saratoga Hospital, if there's enough business go around.

"We believe so," Calbone said.  "A lot of our belief is based upon the changing way healthcare will be used, less emphasis and less reliance on the most expensive level of care at hospitals."

Malta Med Emergent Care opens Monday morning.
