SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Skidmore College wants to install nearly 7,000 solar panels on a piece of open ground to help power its operations.

The Saratogian newspaper reports Skidmore believes the "solar farm" could produce about 12 percent of the energy needed for its Saratoga Springs campus.

The project is in its early stages and subject to approval by officials in the neighboring town of Greenfield, where Skidmore wants to install the solar panels on an 8-acre piece of 120 acres the school owns.

It would be funded in part through a $2.35 million state grant and operated by a developer that would sell the electricity to the college.

Skidmore says the panels would generate enough electricity to power 2,600 typical homes.
