SCHENECTADY - Ellis Hospital is one step closer to having a new and improved emergency area.

Its supporters signed the final beam for the project on Thursday.

Neil and Jane Golub from Price Chopper were among those who were there, along with Jim Connolly, the President and CEO of Ellis Medicine.

“It’s going to be a great design that actually allows us to incorporate all the mental health services we provide on a crisis basis. it also will have children friendly areas, we can open in a modular fashion. It will have convenient parking,” said Connolly.

The new ER should be completed in early 2015.

It will allow Ellis to turn the emergency room on McLellan Street into an urgent care center.
