FORT EDWARD - Police say a village man killed his own son in a fit of anger.

Kevin Wayne King is accused of second degree murder and first degree manslaughter.

It happened Sunday at the two-story apartment at 25 Lydius Street where King lived with the child, the child's mother and her other children.

King was watching the 3-month-old baby, named Brett Micheal, while the mother ran some errands.

According to court documents, King grabbed the child by the torso, shook him and then slammed him down onto the floor. The baby was pronounced dead at around 9 o'clock Sunday night at Albany Med.

The child apparently wouldn't stop crying, and King who according to a law enforcement source was trying to play Xbox, became frustrated.

Police say King changed his story several times during interviews Sunday .

"The stories that he gave were not consistent with the child's injuries. And he did later give separate accounts and eventually did tell us what had actually taken place," said Chief Justin Derway of the Fort Edward Police Department.

Derway said the child had significant head injuries and an autopsy will determine an exact cause of death.

Neighbors in the apartment complex are heartbroken. A stuffed animal serves as a makeshift memorial.

"I was devastated, said Megan Montello, who lives two doors down. "I have a a really hard time hearing about anything like that that happens. Very, very sad."

King is being held in the Washington County Jail without bail. He's scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, but the D.A. says he could be indicted before then.

Investigators were asked if Kevin King showed any remorse.

"It's difficult to comment on remorse when a person gives one set of circumstances and then it takes a while to get to the truth," said Captain Tim Munro of the New York State Police.

Police say the child's mother is cooperating.

This is the third case in just 18 months of a father or a father figure accused of murdering a child. The other cases were in nearby Warren County.
