TROY – It was an emotional morning in court. Jason Guynup was sentenced to twenty years to life in prison Monday morning, for stabbing Nikki Hart to death in Schodack last year.
Hart's sister, mother and father spoke in court.
Sister Ashley Hart and her six-year-old daughter were there the night of the murder.
People cried in court as she talked in detail about the horror she saw and heard that night.
At times, it looked as if Jason Guynup found some of the things difficult to hear.
He admitted he killed Nikki Hart in December of 2012, storming into the home and slashing her throat.
Nikki had asked her sister, Ashley, to stay over because she was worried for her safety.
She had an order of protection, and Ashley watched as Guynup ran into the house and into the bedroom.
She rushed to protect her sister, but the struggle had also woken and frightened Ashley’s daughter, and Nikki insisted Ashley go take care of her.
Ashley called 911, saw Guynup run out, and then found her sister lying on the floor, bleeding to death.
Guynup's two young daughters were also in the home while their mother was being murdered.
Guynup also spoke in court, and apologized for all the pain and suffering he caused.
He says he wakes up every day knowing he failed miserably as a father, as a son, as a boyfriend.
