NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The death of an elderly North Adams woman is now being treated as a homicide.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office says 84-year-old Ellen DePaoli was found dead in her home Tuesday night. Police made the discovery after responding to a 911 call at 8 p.m. reporting a death at 409 Walker St.

Investigators could be seen going in and out of the house all morning long.

Although the circumstances surrounding DePaoli’s death are unclear, Mayor Richard Alcombright says there is no killer on the loose and the public has nothing to be afraid of.

“We don’t think there’s a slasher running around our community at this time,” Alcombright told reporters.

A neighbor says DePaoli lived in the house with her son and that they’re very nice people.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Boston.
