The mayor of the City of Cohoes is asking the city council to more than double his salary. Tuesday evening, the council holds a public hearing on the budget that would grant that raise
Mayor George Primeau wants his pay raised from $35,000, the amount in this year's budget, to nearly $80,000.
Primeau took over earlier this year when the former mayor, John McDonald, who made nearly $60,000.
And while the Cohoes Democratic Chairman Gil Ethier says that even though Primeau deserves a raise, he thinks it's too big a hike in one chunk.
"I would think that $60,000 is the number…because this is still Cohoes, a small town," said Ethier.
One member of the council, Roger Signoracci, tells NewsChannel 13 that he thinks the $80,000 salary for the mayor's job is not unreasonable, given that the Cohoes police chief makes $86,000.
He says the Cohoes School Superintendent makes $160,000.
