Salem man arrested for wrongly collecting benefits

FORT EDWARD – Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Salem man for falsifying his income in order to collect Medicaid benefits and food stamps.
Robert Smilansky, 56, was charged with Grand Larceny and Filing a False Instrument on Tuesday. He’s accused of collecting more than $5,600 in benefits he was not entitled to.
Both the County Department of Social Services and the Sheriff’s office were involved in the investigation.
Smilansky is due in court on Tuesday.
