BOLTON LANDING, N.Y. (AP) - Researchers will begin a high-tech survey of Lake George's bottom and the surrounding mountains this coming week.

IBM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this summer announced a three-year project to create one of the most sophisticated environmental monitoring and prediction systems at the Adirondack lake.

Scientists will begin using aerial and boat-based surveying techniques on the 32-mile lake to create a high-resolution contour map and images of the lakebed. They are also mapping the surrounding mountains. The idea is to create an accurate computer model of water circulation within the Lake George watershed.

Lake George is famous for its clear waters, but it faces threats related to development and invasive species. Researchers say a better understanding of the lake will make it easier to tackle those issues.
