MALTA - It was the closest margin of victory in yesterday's election. Just 12 votes. That's the number of votes by which Democrat Cynthia Young appears to have defeated incumbent Republican Paul Sausville, who was running for a fifth, two-year term as Malta supervisor.

Not only is Paul Sausville predicting victory, he says, after all the absentee votes have been counted, he will wind up defeating Cynthia Young by exactly four votes. That's despite the fact he was behind by 12 votes when the polls closed on Tuesday.

“I think that optimistic on (Sausville's) part,” says Young.

Sausville said he will narrowly eke out victory. He refused to be interviewed on camera.

So far, the Board of Elections has gotten back 112 absentee ballots. 70 are from enrolled Republicans, and 15 are from enrolled Democrats. That's causing Sausville to predict the four vote win.

“He's assuming that all the Republicans that submitted absentee ballots will be in his favor, but I think that the statistics prove there had to be an awful lot of Republicans that voted for me yesterday,” said Young, who serves on the Assessors Board.

She got defeated by Sausville two years ago, by just 57 votes. This time, it's even closer and it was the main topic on Wednesday in this Saratoga County community.

“12 people sat at home when they could have come out,” said one woman.

“I assume they will have a recount,” said another woman.

"As near as I can tell, it has been at least 30 years since a Democrat was elected to anything in Malta at all,” said Young.

Why did she score a possible victory this time?

Malta has undergone huge changes, due in large part to the $8 billion GlobalFoundries plant here.

Sausville said it was not GlobalFoundries that may have done him in, however, he deferred the question to those who voted.

Young says Sausville failed to capitalize on the GlobalFoundries opportunity.
