ALBANY – A hospitalized inmate attacked a corrections officer at Albany Med on Saturday.

Officials say the inmate, Anthony Smith, was hospitalized after intentionally swallowing something on November 5.

A nurse was attempting to treat Smith when officials say he became argumentative and aggressive.

Smith was not restrained and allegedly punched a correction officer in the head multiple times when the sergeant attempted to come between Smith and the nurse.

It took three officers to restrain the 56-year-old inmate.

The sergeant was treated for cuts to his head, ear and face.

No one else was injured.

Smith is serving a life sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility and has attacked staff 18 different times.

Police say assault charges are pending.
