Albany Mayor-elect Kathy Sheehan talks about her effort to get FiOS put in Albany.

ALBANY - If Albany is going to be cutting edge, it needs a fiber optic network.

On Tuesday, Albany Mayor-elect Kathy Sheehan called on Verizon to commit to installing FiOS in the city.

Sheehan says higher internet speeds will help spur business downtown and put Albany schools ahead of other urban districts.

“What do we need in order to be able to do that? Access to technology, high speed cutting edge. Our children deserve the opportunity to have access to the best tools in order to succeed,” Sheehan said.

She was joined by officials from the union that represents Verizon workers.

They supported her during the recent campaign.
