MALTA - A Dunkin Donuts in Malta is destroyed by fire overnight -- and the repercussions are felt well beyond that one store.
The building is a total loss, but the headline is that no one was injured.
The call came in at around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. It was apparently spotted by a passing DOT employee that saw smoke coming from the roof.
When firefighters arrived it was fully involved.
This is not just a Dunkin Donuts store. It’s a baking facility that supplies doughnuts to 21 stores in the area.
Firefighters say there was one employee inside the baking facility at the time of the fire. He made it out safely.
The fire chief says they tried to attack it from the inside but it was just too intense.
“Once we got inside we realized that the fire was well advanced into the upper areas of the building. It was beyond our control at that point and it became too dangerous to be inside the building,” said Chief Pete Shaw of the Malta Ridge Fire Department.
Firefighters and fire investigators are still on the scene Thursday. They say they have no reason to believe that this fire was anything by accidental.
The business owner tells NewsChannel 13 that none of his 40 employees will go without a paycheck.
