Two groups are questioning whether USDA policies on salmonella in raw chicken go far enough to protect public health.
Researchers with Pew Charitable Trusts studied two recent salmonella outbreaks linked to raw chicken from a California farm.
They say weaknesses in the food inspection system contributed to the outbreaks.
In addition, a recent Consumer Reports' study looked at 316 raw chicken breasts.
It says 10 percent were contaminated with salmonella. Bottom line, practice good hygiene when handling raw chicken.
