New York and Vermont are among 13 states, increasing their minimum wage.
Starting January 1, workers in Vermont will be paid a minimum of $8.73 an hour. That is an increase of 13 cents.
In New York State, the minimum wage increases from $7.25 to $8 hour on Wednesday. Next year, it goes up to $8.75 cents an hour. In 2016, the hourly wage will hit $9.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver wants to get to $9 sooner. He says he'll introduce legislation to make that happen in the next session.
