FORT EDWARD – Could the General Electric plant in Fort Edward have a new purpose?

NewChannel 13’s media partners at the Post Star report that creative ideas for the plant are being proposed.

Students at SUNY Adirondack raised an interesting idea to U.S. Representative Bill Owens at a forum last week.

The students asked Owens how he feels about using the plant to manufacture industrial hemp.

Owens says it’s something people should look at.

The Washington County Board of Supervisors recently passed a resolution urging state and federal governments to allow hemp to be grown and sold in New York.

Indstrial hemp is derived from a different cannabis subspecies than marijuana.

Supporters of legalizing industrial hemp say it can be used to make clothing, paper, even cosmetics.
