Finding yourself in unlikely places

One of my brother's and his family was in town recently. It was too cold for skiing and the falling snow made it unappealing to travel far from home. So what to do?

Ice Skating!

It had to be 15 years since I last skated. My husband doesn't skate - bad knees -  so I got out of the habit of heading to the rink.

As a kid I would skate pretty much every weekend for hours. Before the town park was built I'd skate with the neighborhood kids on any patch of frozen water. I learned to carve a few figures - skate backwards .. the regular stuff kids do.

So out to the rink we went - my brother, his wife and their daughter... They all have those new 'fangled' skates- more like the boots worn to cross country ski . .me with my old white, leather skates still adorned with the red and white pom-poms I've had since I was 10. The skates had been on the shelf so long the blade covers broke when I pulled them off.

Uh-oh - would I be that out of shape.

Tentatively I got onto the ice, staying close to the wall. I remembered hitting the ice, hard one of the last times I was out. I didn't want a repeat of that.

So I went slowly. Push, push glide .. push, push, glide. The rhythm was coming back. The smile broke out.

We skated for an hour .. and I was just about doing crossovers on the turn.

The point to all this - just because we grow up doesn't mean we have to leave behind the things that make us smile -- they're the things that keep us young - keep us connected to others - and are simply, fun.

And oh yeah, I'll be taking those skates out again real soon.
