TROY - Troy police say they're "pulling out all stops" trying to find Jesse Sawyer Jr. He is wanted, for now, for allegedly producing child pornography, but police say the crime "is even a lot sicker than that."
Police say the crime is so disturbing and so revolting, they're going beyond normal protocol to find Sawyer. They're enlisting the help of the FBI.
Sawyer is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 160 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Police say he is their only suspect in a series of unspeakable sex crimes that they caught wind of a few months ago.
"This case came to our attention in January," Capt. John Cooney, spokesman for Troy police, said. "A very courageous woman discovered images on her computer graphically depicting the suspect engaging in sexual activity with very young females."
Cooney says there were three victims, all of them little girls, one of them 6 years old and the other two under the age of 5. Cooney says the victims are known to Sawyer.
"The ages of the victims certainly makes the information gathering process a little difficult," Cooney said.
Cooney says the age of the victims has made information gathering "a little difficult" and he says the evidence shows Sawyer is the only suspect.
At the Troy address that police listed as Sawyer's last known residence, no one answered the door and the diagonally parked car in the driveway served as a blockade to arriving guests.
Police were at the scene on Wednesday night, saying they were called by the homeowner after media began knocking on the door.
Even though, as of 11 p.m. Wednesday, police had no idea where Sawyer might be hiding, it wasn't difficult to find out how people feel about the type of crime he's allegedly committed. Residents in the neighborhood where Sawyer apparently used to live say they were shocked and disgusted by the news, not all that much different from the sentiments of the hardened detectives trying to track down their suspect.
"Police officers are also parents," Cooney said. "Police officers have to look at evidence in cases like this that sends them home with a sick feeling in their stomach. We have a monster on the street and it's our job to find that monster and keep everybody safe by putting him away."
Cooney also says Sawyer was raised in an environment where police have had contact with his acquaintances and family members in a context of illegal sexual conduct. He goes on to say, "the suspect has been exposed to conduct of this nature in the past."
Anyone with information in the case is urged to contact Troy Police at 518-270-4411.
