Police say a woman died and a man is in the hospital after a stabbing in Troy.
The stabbing took place just before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning at 93 Sixth Avenue in the Lansingburgh neighborhood.
It appears the woman victim, now identified as 33-year-old Amber Fernald, was dead by the time Troy Police arrived at her apartment.
They confronted a man near her body.
He was taken to the hospital, also with a stab wound.
Neighbors say there had been gunshots in the area a couple hours earlier.
Police were called but made no arrest.
It has not been determined whether the shots are tied to the subsequent stabbing but there have been problems at the location.
“There’s a little history here of domestics, there’s more fire department activity that’s been here at the house. I believe there was an order of protection that was in place,” says Troy Police Captain Dan DeWolf.
Later overnight, neighbors say three kids ran out of the house.
Police were called but when they arrived, it was too late.
“We heard the kids come running out of the house talking about ‘call 911, mommy, the guy’s upstairs choking mommy’, so that’s when we all got our cell phones out and we came outside to call 911,” says one of the male neighbors who was at the scene.
Friends say the man in the apartment did not live with the woman and the kids.
It’s not clear whether the man was injured before police rushed the apartment and found the dead woman.
“He obviously has more information to give us,” says the police captain.
At this point, police have not charged the man and his name has not been released.
It appears there was no one else involved in the incident once the kids ran out of the house.
