TROY - The Troy teenager who shot her father to death is going to prison.

Thursday morning, Trinity Copeland told the judge and her family that she had no choice but to kill Harlan Copeland as he slept in their apartment in Troy back in July 2012.

It's a very similar story to what she told the jury during her April trial.

It didn't work then, either, as the panel quickly found her guilty of murder in the second degree.

Thursday the judge sentenced the now 19-year-old to 25 years to life.

Before handing down the judgment he told Copeland that he did consider her age when making this decision but added that at no point did she accept responsibility or apologize for the brutal crime.

Trinity did repeatedly tell her father's side of the family that she was sorry and that she hopes they can forgive her but she also added that her father's isn't the only life lost in this situation.

“I understand the choice I made was not the right choice that night I’m not trying to point all the fingers at my father but I still want to live my life too,” says Copeland.

Trinity Copeland’s brother, Harlan Copeland II says that his sister is the victim in all of this and that they had a very difficult childhood.
