EAST GREENBUSH - The storm on Wednesday caused widespread damage in Rensselaer County.

On Electric Avenue in East Greenbush, a number of trees were uprooted and wires were down.

Meantime, crews were busy working up and down Columbia Turnpike to try and clean up from the damage.

A tree came down on a building and pickup truck at Gettysburg Flagworks. The business lost phone and electricity two days before the Fourth of July.

“My general manager and I were up at the local restaurant, East Greenbush Diner, trying to get a cup of tea. We walked in and there was no power. Then we got a phone call from our graphic artist who said ‘Mike, there’s a tree that just fell on your truck. You’d better come down,” said Mike Cronin of Gettysburg Flag Works.

A part of Brookview Road was shut down because a tree was tangled in power lines.

A group of young cousins on one East Greenbush road were enjoying a summer day when the storm hit.

“I saw a tree falling, and it just started cracking. There was a lot of thunder and lightning,” said one.

“It was kind of cool, but kind of scary cool. We went in the pool and we heard the thunder, and we got kind of scared. Then we got out and we saw it. It was crazy,” said another.

“The tree was turning sideways and bending. It was scary. There was leaves flying around and it was hard to see,” said a third person.
