Vermont has issued its first ticket after a new law that makes smoking with a child in the car illegal.
A St. Johnsbury police officer issued the ticket on July 19 to 32-year-old Daniel Berube.
The Caledonia Record reports that the man was smoking a cigarette with a toddler in the back of the car.
Police say the man told them he knew of the new law but didn’t know if it was being inforced yet.
The law was enacted on July 1.
It prohibits smoking in cars carrying kids under age 8.
Berube was issued a ticket that includes a $162 fine.
