TROY – Troy Police have a murder suspect in custody. Less then three weeks after 16-year old Eshane Walker was stabbed to death at a backyard birthday party, Troy detectives say another 16-year old is responsible.
In shackles and chains, 16-year old Jason Johnson of the Bronx was led into Troy Police Court late Wednesday afternoon to face a judge.
City detectives say they're certain he's the only one responsible for stabbing and killing Walker back on July 18th, during a backyard birthday party at 447 Second Avenue in Lansingburgh, where more than 100 guests were present.
"We have a good case right now," said Troy Deputy Police Chief Richard McAvoy, "If we get more people to come forward it would be an overwhelming case for us."
Detectives wouldn't say if the two teenagers knew each other, or how Johnson was able to make it back to the Bronx, or how soon after the murder he fled. They also wouldn't reveal how soon after the killing, he became a suspect.
"We received credible information and we thank those who came forward," said Troy Police Chief John Tedesco.
During the course of the investigation, police say they tried to track down everyone who attended the party, and they were also closely monitoring social media.
"The party was posted and then people commented about attending the party," McAvoy said, "We tried to track people down through that, and we did."
For now, Johnson is charged as an adult with second degree murder, but that could change.
"There could be additional charges that the district attorney's office would prepare and present to a grand jury," said Carmelo Laquidara, an assistant DA, ":We're prepared to to that in the very near future."
After pleading not guilty, Johnson was sent to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 P.M.
