NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - A new center opened Wednesday in the Berkshires in the shadow of the now-closed North Adams Regional Hospital.

The Worker Assistance Center in North Adams City Hall is for area residents who lost their jobs when the hospital closed in March.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday morning.

The new center will help the city's unemployed residents find work.

The sudden closure of the North Adams Regional Hospital left more than 500 workers jobless and Northern Berkshire without emergency care.

The parent company eventually filed for bankruptcy.

Berkshire Medical Center opened an emergency services center at the former NARH and is expected to take ownership in the coming weeks.
