ALBANY - You're not alone if your newest New York inspection or registration sticker is peeling off.
"They have trouble sticking, they come off you have to put 'em back on, coming off completely," one driver said.
"Every now and then I try and stick it back on but it just peels off again or on, only because it's taped," said motorist John Hodges.
We're trying to be as proactive as we possibly can. Pick a windshield, almost any windshield, and at least one of the two stickers...is unstuck.
How could you mix this up how could you make a mistake with the glue?
Clearly, it's not a problem in our neighboring states. We saw one from Massachusetts, it's on perfectly. But right next to it - a NY tag...falling off.
"Absolutely annoying. How could you mix this up how could you make a mistake with glue?" questioned Hodges.
Drivers aren't the only ones complaining. When News Channel 13 asked the Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner how this could happen...he had to vent a little bit.
"I found it absolutely amazing that in this day and age with all the technology, that we're having problems with glue," said DMV Commissioner David Swarts.
Swarts went on to explain that not all but many of the 21-million inspection and registration stickers the State purchased last year have flawed glue. New York is demanding restitution from the two separate vendors and has already identified new vendors for when the current contracts expire.
Sometimes, Swarts admits, the lowest bid...isn't the best.
"With all the problems in this nation and in New York State, glue on a windshield should be the last thing we have to address.
DMV sent letters to all police departments and judges explaining the issue and asking that drivers not be penalized for something that clearly isn't their fault.
