B-P residents approve budget, buses and land; defeat Amsterdam Library proposition
- May 16, 2017
Residents of the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District approved three of the four propositions on the ballot May 16, including a $34.7 million budget for the 2017-18 school year, four new school buses and the purchase of 1.5 acres of land next to the Broadalbin campus, while they rejected a $10,000 annual tax levy to support the Amsterdam Free Library.
By a vote of 586 to 350, residents approved a $34,697,486 budget for the 2017-18 school year. The approved budget calls for a 2.09 percent increase in spending from the 2016-17 school year and a 2.15 percent tax levy increase, which is the district’s calculated tax levy “cap.” The budget maintains or expands all current programs and services.
District residents also approved (676 to 261) a proposition that will allow Broadalbin-Perth to purchase four school buses. The state will pay for approximately 75.2 percent of the cost of the purchase, and the funds gained from the resale of old buses as well as savings on maintenance will result in no tax increase.
By a vote of 640 to 298, residents approved a proposition to purchase 1.5 acres of land adjacent to the Broadalbin campus for $25,000. The district will use the land to solve problems related to its athletic facilities, including locating track and field throwing areas next to Patriot Field rather than at the opposite end of the grounds. There is no tax increase associated with the land purchase.
Residents rejected (188 to 752) a proposition by the Amsterdam Free Library to raise $10,000 in annual taxes on properties located in the district. If the proposition had passed, each parcel in the district would have been taxed approximately $1.56 each year on the annual school tax bill.
Residents also voted to fill two seats on the Broadalbin-Perth Board of Education. Incumbents Stephen Syzdek and Robert Becker received 720 and 711 votes, respectively. Becker and Syzdek ran unopposed for re-election.
