The CDC reports widespread flu activity in 46 states. That's compared to just 12 states over this same week last year.

Doctors say the holidays - bringing people together - are likely to blame for the surge in cases. So far, 41,000 cases are being reported this season nationwide.

While the flu vaccine is not as effective this year, experts say some protection is better than none. They add the vaccine helps cut down on the severity of symptoms and also lessens the chance of complications like pneumonia.
