The match basically sets their career trajectory.

NewsChannel 13 was with the students at Albany Medical Center as they opened their placement letters.

At the stroke of noon, residency placement letters were opened by Albany Medical College students, as they were by students nationwide.

The soon to be graduating fourth-year students pin their future hopes on making a match in the specialty and hospital setting that will shape their future.

Residency matches follow an interview process. Not everyone gets their first choice. The selection is made by computer at the National Resident Matching Program.

Some may have to travel further than they wanted. However, 21 students will be staying at Albany Medical Center for their residency and that's exactly what Delmar resident Casey O’Connor hoped for as he trains to be an orthopedic surgeon.

“The best day of my life and the most important day of my career and it's been wonderful,” he exclaimed.

Also staying close to home is Niskayuna resident, Peter Andriakos, who will be following in his dad's footsteps as he trains to be an anesthesiologist.

“I was very pleased to learn I was staying in Albany where I want to be and turns out that was the result,” he noted. “[I] feel like I've been looking forward to this day since I was a teenager.”

Thirty-five percent of these students were matched with programs in New York State. Forty-nine percent of this year's class will train in primary care specialties like internal medicine and pediatrics.

Worldwide, The National Resident Matching Program celebrated its largest Residency Match Day ever Friday with a record-high 35,969 U.S. and international medical school students and graduates vying for 31,757 positions -- the most ever offered for Match Day.
