Dad credits donated blood for helping with cancer survival

CLIFTON PARK - There are countless families in our community that rely on you to give the gift of life. Among them, a young family in Clifton Park, whose future looks bright thanks to donated blood.

"I'm truly blessed to be able to have a family and get through this," acknowledged Ryan Manning.

College sweethearts, Ryan and Kayla Manning married nine years ago and the "for better or worse" part of their vows quickly took on significance.

Ryan was diagnosed with cancer seven years ago. Powerful chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant with his own cells seemed to knock it out.

When Lincoln was born 3 ½ years ago, their family was complete.

However, the bottom then fell out. The cancer returned and this time Ryan needed donated bone marrow -- a more aggressive treatment. He underwent that this past May.

Ryan says he had a big reliance on donated blood -- especially early on.

"With the uncertainty of your platelet counts, your white blood counts, when you're going through chemotherapy they drop," explained Ryan.

Doctors warned him that there might be days blood wasn't available.

"I don't even want to think that way, but I mean it's reality, it's the truth. Without donated blood, there would probably be a lot of people not here today," he noted.

Ryan's regaining his strength. He needs it to keep up with Lincoln.

Returning to work is still months away as his immune system has yet to get up to speed. However, there's one thing he's got plenty of energy for -- giving thanks to those who give the gift of life.

"Thank you. We appreciate it," he acknowledged.
