There’s a breakthrough in efforts to better understand the Zika virus.

Scientists have discovered just one genetic change is to blame for turning the once harmless virus into a dangerous illness. They made the discovery while comparing Zika strains from 2010 to those from 2016.

Although the virus changed over time, just one single mutation triggered severe neurological birth defects.
