Gun buyback program underway in Capital Region

A new program aimed at getting illegal guns off the streets is now underway in the Capital Region.

It's called the "12 Days of Gun Buybacks." It's being sponsored by the Victory Christian Church, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office and the sheriff's department among others. They say last Christmas, the "Gifts for Guns" program took nearly 40 illegal guns off the street and they credit that with a drop in gun violence in Albany over the past year. They're hoping to collect even more this year.

"We want people to avoid going to jail. We want people to think about what they're doing, think about what they're carrying and say, ‘Look, let me get rid of this and turn over a new leaf.’ And what better time than Christmas," wondered Pastor Charlie Muller with Victory Christian Church.

Anyone who turns in an illegal gun will receive a gift card from Crossgates Mall.
