3 NY state agencies targeting sale of contraband cigarettes

October 07, 2017 06:30 PM

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York tax department has joined forces with two other state agencies in an effort to reduce sales of contraband cigarettes.

The partnership is with the state Gaming Commission and Liquor Authority. Retailers caught selling untaxed cigarettes in the state will face immediate punishment, which will include losing other state-issued licenses, including lottery and alcohol sales.

The effort targets the bottom line. Lottery and alcohol sales are the largest sources of revenue for certain retailers.

There are approximately 21,000 licensed retailers selling cigarettes in the state, and an overwhelming number of them also sell lottery tickets and liquor.
