Albany is launching a new effort aimed at reducing poverty.
The state has awarded the city $1.5 million as part of its Empire State Poverty Reduction Effort. The money will be used to coordinate local and state governments, non-profits and community groups. They'll be tasked with identifying issues and developing solutions to end poverty.
Mayor Sheehan is hopeful the effort will succeed.
"We're uniquely positioned because this is an area that is growing. An area where investment exists. The biggest challenge for employers is finding people who can do the jobs that exist," explained Sheehan.
The non-profit, CARES, Inc., which is dedicated to ending homelessness, will serve as the initiative's lead planner.
