ALBANY - Alexander Wilson and Shaina Devarie are locked up at the Albany County Jail after police say they caught the Troy couple in Albany in a traffic stop that netted drugs and thousands in cash.
“Ten grams of crack cocaine, ten grams of heroin and ten grams of pure fentanyl,” said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.
Apple says they got a tip that Wilson, 25, and Devarie, 22, were on Watervliet Ave. from a previous arrest the day before where they barged into a home on Main Street in Cohoes with drug and prostitution activity. Matthew Kirshner, 40, was taken into custody.
“We shut that place down,” Apple said. “We received some information subsequent to that arrest that led us to the Motel 6 area of Watervliet Avenue in Albany.”
Apple says this is all part of an approach by his office to attack the heroin and opiod epidemic head on.
“We can't arrest our way out of this. But we can't just turn our head and let these people continue to plague our communities with nothing more than killing powder,” Apple said.
He says what makes it an even more dangerous cocktail is the fentanyl.
“I always tell everybody, look at a salt shaker. If that salt shaker is full, that would be heroin. Now take the same salt shaker and put about three or four grains in the bottom of it, that's fentanyl,” Apple said.
Apple says they will continue to target dealers. In addition to that, the Albany County Jail runs a treatment program and his sheriff's deputies constantly go out into the community to talk about prevention.
“I think really that's how we're going to get ahead this whole disaster is by the prevention, the awareness and the education,” Apple said.
