Berkshire County will soon have a new district attorney. The current district attorney, David Capeless, announced on Thursday that he is resigning.

After three and a half decades of prosecuting the worst of the worst cases in Berkshire County, Capeless announced – someone unexpectedly – that he is retiring.

"I am most proud, however, of the people who are the Berkshire District Attorney's Office. They are – all of them – talented, professional, ethical, dedicated and hard-working and the greatest reward of my career has been to work with and lead them," Capeless said while fighting back tears.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker appointed First Assistant D.A. Paul Caccaviello to take over the office until a permanent district attorney can be decided in an election this upcoming fall. Caccaviello has 28 years of prosecutorial experience.
