Bluesy teens bring youthful approach to old sound

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - If you spend any time with teenagers, chances are you've heard the music they listen to. Chances are also good you sounded just like your parents when you told them to turn that racket down. However, there's a local band that's taking a youthful approach to an old sound. They've just been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to turn it up.
The name of the band is "Born IV Blues."
The players are Diego Mongue on drums, Julia Ostellino Moran on vocals, Austin Peck on guitar and Josiah Joyce on bass.
They write some original music, recently recorded an album and they're currently rehearsing for an international blues competition in Memphis. What they can't do is drive themselves to it. That's because all of them are between 14 and just barely 16 years old.
Six months ago, there was no band. Most of them didn't even know one another. However, Diego's mom has a blues band and someone asked him if he had one good enough to compete in the upcoming competition. He didn't, but he said he did.
"He said, 'If you can get me some tracks, we'll put you in the running for the youth showcase," recalled Diego.
Diego, from Williamstown, Mass. set out to find band mates and the three he chose had zero blues experience.
"Very little. I didn't know very much about the blues at all," admitted Josiah.
"I knew about the blues, but I didn't regularly listen to it," echoed Julia.
They got to work rehearsing and sent a few tracks to competition organizers and received an official invitation to compete January 19.
"As we're getting closer to it, I think we're all getting more and more excited," beamed Josiah. "We're all like, 'Wait, we're going to Memphis!'"
"This is really cool. We'll never get this chance ever again," echoed Josiah.
The blues has grown on the teens who love the sound they make together. They're hoping their friends will too.
"All my friends are really happy for me, but they don't really get what I'm going to actually do in a few weeks," noted Julia.
Win or lose -- the competition will not be the end of "Born IV Blues." They all agree, they're more than bandmates now -- they're friends, and this is just the beginning.
"I knew it was going to work from that first rehearsal.
"It makes me very happy. I love singing the blues," pointed out Julia.
The competition is January 19. They head down to Memphis the day before.
NewsChannel 13 will be sure to let you know how they do.
