Calls for Abelove to step down after indictment

There are now calls for Rensselaer County District Attorney Joel Abelove to step down. It comes after he was indicted in connection with his handling of the deadly police shooting of Edson Thevenin.

Abelove is facing two charges of official misconduct and one count of perjury.

There is no law that says a district attorney facing allegations or an indictment has to step down from office. However, Abelove is the top prosecutor of Rensselaer County and will have to pass judgment and present evidence in cases where people are facing criminal charges.

There are also questions on whether Abelove can still be effective.

This is still an accusation and Abelove is still innocent until proven guilty.

As of Friday afternoon, Abelove said he had no plans to leave the post.
