A flier circulating among Clifton Park residents is being called misleading

March 31, 2017 11:40 PM

CLIFTON PARK - Four days remain until the referendum that will decide what will become of 34 acres of land behind the Shatekon Elementary School.

A flier distributed to Clifton Park residents encourages a "yes" vote in support of the sale from the Shenendehowa School District to BBL Construction. The only trouble is a spokesperson for Friends of Clifton Park Open Space is quoted on it. They're a grassroots campaign that has been very vocal about their plan to vote "no".

"Misleading and purposely misleading to put my name and Friends of Clifton Park Open Space on anything that says vote 'yes' is just unconscionable," Susan Burton explained, a spokesperson for Friends of Clifton Park Open Space.

Susan Burton says while the groups goal is a Central Park, she doesn't believe the 17 acres BBL says it will donate, if the sale goes through, will be suitable enough as development will degrade the land.

"To see these kind of dirty tricks, this is what discourages people from getting involved," Burton said.

It's unclear who is behind the creation of the flier, though a quick search lists "Vote Yes for a Park, LLC" as having been filed on March 21st with a P. O. Box address in Slingerlands.

Many on both sides of the issue have strong feelings about the upcoming vote and Burton realizes voting no doesn't necessarily result in a park.

"We're hoping that if we can be successful with the vote that will open up another public conversation about what to do with this land. I mean we're not talking about how much chalk they should buy were talking about land-use issues that affect the entire community," Burton added.

The referendum will take place Tuesday, April 4th from 7am to 9pm at Gowana Middle School.

Marc Goldstein at BBL Construction and the Facebook group, Committee for Shen's Future, have not returned our request for comment.
