Crews battle fire at Chatham Manor Apartments

CHATHAM - Multiple crews responded to a fire at the Chatham Manor Apartments at 18 School Street on Sunday morning.

The fire at the complex for elderly and handicapped residents happened just after 8 a.m. Fire officials say three people were rescued from their apartment with two being transported to area hospitals.

The fire was contained to one apartment within the building with heavy smoke damage to the rest of the complex. Eight of the 32 apartments in the building were left uninhabitable. One resident was placed in another facility and several others are with their family.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
