EAST SCHODACK - Firefighters battled a house fire in East Schodack on Friday morning. It broke out around 5:30 a.m. at 3047 Route 150 near Burden Lake Road.
Five people sleeping inside got out safely. However, one woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Three of the five dogs on the property survived but cats, birds and chickens died.
A preliminary investigation suggests the fire started in the basement or near a wood stove used to heat the house. Flames then traveled to the attic. Firefighting efforts were difficult since the roof has four layers, including metal.
The house is expected to be bulldozed, according to Schodack Town Supervisor David Harris.
