January 17, 2018 06:14 PM

SCHENECTADY -- Brittany Thackrah was supposed to be celebrating her father's 55th birthday Wednesday. Instead, her dad is in Albany Med in critical condition with a fractured skull and broken ribs.

She got the call Friday evening. Schenectady PD told her her dad had been hit at Erie and Union around 6:30 p.m. The driver was nowhere to be found.

"We got down to the hospital and learned that he had traumatic brain injuries. That he had been a victim of a hit-and-run accident," said Brittany Thackrah.

Police say they are going through footage from both city and private cameras, but cannot share anything yet.

A reporter only saw one camera in the area, but a shop employee says it does not capture the intersection.

Jet Thackrah is legally blind. He moved to Schenectady from Amsterdam to be closer to classes at SCCC. He was working on a casino management degree and hoped to eventually get a job at Rivers.

Friday evening was warm and wet. Brittany and her sister say their father had plenty of experience crossing the street there. Thackrah has had an apartment in the Stockade for about a year. The crosswalk signal buttons make a chirping noise at the intersection. They think he was headed to Stewart's on Erie Boulevard.

Police are also still trying to figure out exactly where Thackrah was crossing the street.

Brittany and her sister have been at Albany Med nonstop, wishing their father was better.

"You could be standing in line at the grocery store, and he would make the guy behind him his new best friend. He could just make friends anybody," said Brittany about her father.

Even in the event no one else saw the accident, Brittany knows at least one person knows what happened.

"You know when you get in an accident. You know when you hit something. You know whoever hit my dad, knows it, and drove away."

Schenectady PD can be reached at (518) 382-5211.
