Dessert business proving sweet for Kinderhook woman

KINDERHOOK -- Marjan Beebe is living the sweet life – and it all started with a challenge from her date after she tasted the apple pie he'd ordered.

“I said, ‘This is not a pie.’ He said, ‘Why don't you make one?”

That wasn't a daunting task for Marjan, a native of the Netherlands. She grew up with two great cooks and bakers.

She made that apple pie for the man who would be her husband. He realized it didn't just taste good. It tasted so good that she needed to start making them for other people to enjoy.

First they were sold at a couple of farmers markets. Today, that number has risen nicely and there are stores. In fact, business is so good she's expanded and has employees. Her brother also helps out.

Marjan never imagined becoming a businesswoman. But today as she lives her dream, she's humbled that so many people love her dutch desserts.
