Man sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for murders

ALBANY - Edward Mero received 50 years to life. It was the max and a consecutive sentence for the 30-year-old man who brutally cut short the lives of 24-year-old Shelby Countermine and 23-year-old Megan Cunningham.

"I'd like to apologize to the families who lost their daughters but I didn't do it," maintained Mero prior to sentencing Tuesday.

Mero was Megan Cunningham's roommate. She died in a 2013 house fire in Albany that was initially ruled accidental but later connected to Mero.

"I miss her so much that there are days I can't remember to take the effort to keep living. I do keep going, despite pain, because to live is to honor her," said Cunningham's mother, via statement in court.

Shelby Countermine disappeared in December 2014 and her body was found six months later in a shallow grave in Coeymans.

"I will always remember my daughter as a beautiful light. I remember the promise within her and all the dreams we had for her. I will celebrate the time we shared, though every occasion for the rest of my life will be overshadowed by her absence," said Lori Dean, Countermine's mom, through heavy tears.

There will be an appeal, likely arguing that the two different cases should have been tried separately.

"There were issues having to do with the joining of the trials and legality and how they contributed to the conviction," explained Cheryl Coleman, Mero's defense attorney.

Coleman added that she will not handle the appeal because the case deserves a "fresh set of eyes."
